Fascinating Kitten Facts for National Kitten Day

Kittens, arguably the cutest animals on the planet. Today is National Kitten Day and what better way to ‘brush up’ on your kitten knowledge? Read on to discover all about these adorable bundles of joy.

  1. A group of kittens is called a kindle.
  2. Just like us humans can be left or right-handed, kittens can be left or right pawed! In kittens the difference is often gendered, female kittens are usually right-pawedwhile males tend to be left-pawed. With some careful watching, you may be able to determine whether a kitten uses their right or left paw when playing.
  3. All kittens are born with blue eyes, even the darkest of cats! Their true iris colour does not fully develop until they are around 8-12 weeks old. Exposure to UV light also causes the eye to darken, so until a kitten’s eyes are fully open, they will remain blue.
  4. Male cats are called toms and females are called queens or mollies.
  5. Have you heard that cats love a dish of milk and cream? Well, some might enjoy the taste, but many felines are actually lactose intolerant and will get upset stomachs if they have too much milk. For a kitten to drink a saucer of milk, the fat content would make it the calorific equivalent of you eating four burgers in one sitting!
  6. Kittens have belly buttons!
  7. The sweet squeaking sounds that come from a kitten are not just to be cute. Squeaking and meowing are a kitten’s way of telling their mon that they’re hungry. Kittens will also quickly learn to hiss whenever they smell something unfamiliar in their nest.
  8. Whiskers are not just strands of fur. These sensory filaments are deeply embedded in the kitten’s face. They contain nerve endings and as such are important sensory tools for kittens, helping them to navigate the world. This is especially helpful for young kittens that are still getting used to working their body. A kitten’s whiskers are impressively long too. They grow to be as wide as their bodies! So never, ever trim your cat’s whiskers. Without whiskers, a cat can become disoriented and frightened.
  9. Felinesdon’t have taste buds for sweetness! However they can still taste sour, bitter and salty flavors.
  10. Some of the most popular kitten names include Lily, Kitty, Charlie, Bella and Simba.
